Firefighter Training

McKenzie Fire & Rescue believes that the training of its members is crucial to a successful fire service organization.  The department strives to provide quality training to its members using a variety of methods.  Members are expected to give their full attention and energy to learning and improving their capabilities as firefighters and must attend 75% of the weekly departmental training drills.  Members can attend drill each Wednesday morning from 1000 to 1200 hours or each Wednesday evening from 1900 to 2100 hours.  The training focus can range from firefighting to EMS to hazardous materials to water rescue to public education.   At times additional and/or specialized training is scheduled on weekends.

Periodically it is necessary to send members to other departments, out of town or to outside training facilities for training that they cannot get through the department.  Members are encouraged to participate in these opportunities to expand their experience, education and skills.

Safety during training activities is of paramount importance.  Instructors and trainees must pay strict attention and abide by all safety related rules and regulations. Since we play like we practice, reinforcing safe behaviors is part of any training session.

EMS Training

Picture
McKenzie Fire & Rescue follows Lane County Medical Control Board EMT Protocols when responding to a medical emergency alarm with the most senior EMT at the scene in charge of patient care.

An Oregon EMT certification is not a requirement to be a volunteer with McKenzie Fire & Rescue.  Emergency Medical Services education, testing and registration are the responsibility of the individual volunteer.  As most of our alarms are medical calls, all members participate in emergency medical care.  EMS training is provided once monthly at the department's regular scheduled training drills.

Hazardous Spill Training

September 21, 2, & 23, 2010:  Department staff trained with Eugene Water & Electric Board (EWEB) along with multiple government agencies on the McKenzie River.  Participating agencies all have an important role in the McKenzie Watershed Emergency Response System (MWERS).
