DISTRICT:
The McKenzie Fire & Rescue Fire District protects 45 miles of the scenic and popular McKenzie River between Springfield and Blue River, Oregon. The district is entirely rural with a population of approximately 8, 000 citizens. This population number grows in the summer months to an estimated 10,000 with the popularity of the wild and scenic McKenzie River. There are pockets of farming in the valley, but for the most part, the citizens commute to the Eugene/Springfield area to work. The main road through the district is Oregon State Highway 126 (McKenzie Highway), which is a key transportation artery between the heavily populated Willamette Valley and Eastern/Central Oregon.
The beautiful McKenzie River Valley is a 68 mile long corridor stretching between Sisters on the east and Springfield on the west. Renowned for fishing, the McKenzie River supports spring Chinook salmon, winter steelhead and summer steelhead as well as native rainbow, cutthroat and bull trout. The high lakes have been planted with brown and brook trout, making the McKenzie River Valley a sportsman's paradise.

Take the McKenzie Highway (Ore. 126) for sightseeing along the valley. The first part of the valley has many nut and fruit orchards (mainly filberts, apples and cherries), berries (such as marionberry, blueberry and raspberry), mint farms and Christmas tree farms.
The McKenzie River is a favorite place for fishermen and drift boaters. Mild whitewater rafting and drift boat fishing are favorite pastimes here.
East of the fire district, the Aufderheide Memorial Drive, part of the West Cascades National Scenic Byway, has some of the most spectacular scenery in Oregon, including the popular Terwilliger Hot Springs, the Delta Old Growth Nature Trail and ending in the Willamette River Gorge by the Westfir covered bridge. The McKenzie Pass - Santiam Pass National Scenic Byway loop road is one of the most beautiful drives in Oregon. It winds through some of the most recent volcanic flows in the state past many waterfalls.

A hiker's paradise, the area features such trails as the 26 mile McKenzie River National Recreation Trail, which is also open to bicyclists, goes through many volcanic formations.
Whether you prefer deep powder or finely groomed runs, Hoodoo is the place to ski. Just 70 miles away, its wintertime majesty is breathtaking. Oregon's 3rd largest ski area is Willamette Pass located approximately an hour southeast of Eugene.
As if the many recreational opportunities were not enough, the McKenzie River Area offers golfing at the McKenzie River Golf and Tokatee Golf Clubs and horse riding for all ages in the foothills of the McKenzie River Valley. Local stables provide individual and group trail rides.
Lane County enjoys moderate weather year-round. Summer is warm and mostly dry weather perfect for enjoying Lane County’s natural wonders. Fall brings cool and clear weather with magnificent changes in leaf color. Winter’s rainy season is perfect for storm watching on the coast, winter festivals, holiday shopping, and snow skiing. Spring visitors enjoy the results of the winter rain in flower gardens abloom in color and the start of the recreational season.
The McKenzie Valley is a great place to live and raise a family.
